Here at Urban Angles, we pride ourselves on creating images that highlight properties and their features in the most beautiful way. So, it’s only natural that our photographers have the eye for that perfect shot. It’s time to meet the people behind the lens and find out what makes them tick when it comes to photography. First up, it’s James Newton, answering our questions and sharing some of his favourite shots.
How did you get into photography?
“Growing up my father was a media studies/photography teacher at a school in Clayton. That being said, there was always some sort of fully manual camera lying around the house for me to play with. Art was my favourite subject at school and photography quickly became the medium I used to express myself within that subject. I ended up winning the art prize in year 12 so I decided I would follow a career path in photography. The following year I attended RMIT University to do a Bachelor of Arts in Photography and I guess the rest is history.”
Tell us, what excites you about photography?
“I love shooting bold and eye-capturing images whilst collaborating closely with clients and/or colleges to achieve the best possible final product. I also love the diversity of being a photographer. It’s different every day! Whether I’m shooting property or architecture, lifestyle or portraits, flying my drone or even hanging out the side of a helicopter shooting aerials, I am confronted with new challenges every day. That’s what keeps me engaged and excited about what I do.”
What equipment do you use on your shoots?
“I shoot all my commercial work on Canon gear and have just started dabbling in a bit of drone photography with my DJI Mavic Pro. I also have an old-school 35mm film, Leica M6 that I sometimes play around with for fun.”
Who is your favourite photographer and which style of photography do you prefer?
“I follow a whole bunch of really talented photographers on Instagram. At the moment I’m really into looking at lifestyle and street photography. I love seeing beautiful images that capture the fleeting moments of the world around us in its most natural and candid way.”
Who inspires you when it comes to photography?
“Originally it was my Dad who inspired me. I didn’t realise it at the time but his subtle teaching method of just letting me find myself whilst helping me along the way really set me up for being the photographer I have become. Now I am inspired by the people I am around/work with every day.”
